SOLO PERFORMANCE

RETURN HOME

Although I was trained on piano and organ, I have performed most of my adult life on stringed instruments.

On six and twelve string guitars I play original fingerstyle instrumental compositions in a variety of alternative tunings. Audiences often compare my guitar instrumentals to both Will Ackermann and Leo Kottke! My early influences were John Fahey, Bert Jansch and Robbie Basho.

My first exposure to traditional American fiddle music was as a boy, playing along with an upstate New York square dance fiddler (and jazz clarinetist), Ray Robinson. Later I learned southern style fiddle styles with the kind assistance of John Specker of the Correctone String Band and Walt Koken of the Highwoods String Band. I spent many summers travelling to fiddle contests and festivals, including Galax, VA, where I got to jam with the great Tommy Jarrell.

I was inspired to take up both the autoharp and dulcimer after seeing Richard and Mimi Farina in Monterey, CA in 1966. Later I met the great autoharp master, Kilby Snow, who showed me some of his amazing techniques on that instrument. I recently began experimenting with new tunings for diatonic autoharps which bring an extraordinary power and clarity to the instrument.

I am largely self taught on the appalachian dulcimer. I have developed an unusual fingerpicking style on that instrument that maintains the characteristic, haunting drone while allowing me to play complex melodies.

I am also self taught on banjo and mandolin, although I owe a great deal to the many wonderful players who have influenced me through the years.

Much of the time, all these instruments become background for songs, both my original compositions and traditional American folk songs. With all this variety, I can put together a show tailored to fit almost any venue or any occasion.

What People are saying about Bill’s shows:

“Multi-instrumentalist Bill Gregg is well known for his driving fiddle playing with the “Bluehounds”. In addition to being well steeped in the folk tradition, Bill has a passion for traditional and cutting edge instrumentals on 6 & 12 string guitar played in a style that is both provocative and introspective.”

…… Dave Whiting, owner of Red Newt Cellars winery and bistro, Hector, NY.

"My husband and I wanted our wedding music to be something fun and upbeat but also romantic, beautiful and original. Bill Gregg's original processional and recessional pieces were exactly what we were looking for,
as was his guitar music during our cocktail hour. A perfect compliment to our perfect day."
